Wing Chun is a style of Kung Fu (umbrella term describing martial arts from China) which encourages simplicity & efficiency by way of forms (otherwise known as sets or Kata) & solo/partner drills. Wing Chun was popularised by Bruce Lee and is famous for its use of structure to allow a smaller person to deal with a larger opponent.
Kali is one name for the martial arts of the Philippines (also known as Eskrima or Arnis). The style focuses on weapons training from the outset, but also includes unarmed techniques including striking, grappling, throwing and groundwork.
A normal class will be a blend of different martial arts but mainly focusing on Wing Chun Kung Fu & Kali. You will learn to punch, kick, throw, use weapons, defend against an armed threat and what to do on the ground. This will all be taught in a friendly class environment encouraging progression and fun.
What you get out of it depends on your own personal goals. Martial arts can help with confidence, self-esteem, physical fitness, self-defence / awareness skills, mental health and spiritual growth. But mainly we want you to have fun doing it.
No you don’t have to be fit to join. We can work on this at a pace to suit you and you can still learn the martial arts we teach without being an Olympic athlete.
Due to the weapons training, anyone 13 or over. Someone aged 70+ will not train in the same way as someone in their teens / early 20s and we can work with all ages / fitness levels.
Yes, learning martial arts should, first & foremost, give you an edge to be able to defend yourself or your loved ones should the need arise. These include fitness, mental health, a sense of belonging, confidence, rehabilitation (both physical & mental), spiritual growth, and fun.
